In the Spotlight

Faculty and students in Women’s Studies have for decades been writing, teaching, and learning about the issues that are at the core of the current crisis at Penn State: sexual violence and abuse; masculinities and sports; homophobia; ethical inquiry and actions; and male power and dominance in its many forms.  Our classes that address these issues are open for enrollment at schedule.psu.edu. We are continuing to explore the best ways to address these issues in our classrooms, on campus, in the community, and in the nation at large, and urge everyone to read what feminist writers and scholars have to say. Please check our website to learn more about our plans for teach-ins and workshops in the Spring of 2012. The following links are to articles that have engaged many of us, and should generate further debate and conversation.

Why Women's Studies?

Women's Studies is a central site for interdisciplinary teaching and research in the College of the Liberal Arts at Penn State. As a field of study, Women's Studies analyzes the unequal distribution of power and resources by gender. By adding the perceptions, contributions, and experiences of women, this young and vital field of research and teaching has produced an exciting body of knowledge and theory that transforms traditional areas of study.

Career Directions

Women's Studies majors find career opportunities in a wide variety of fields, from business to politics, from publishing to human services work, from education to art. Recent Women's Studies majors are now employed as legal advocates, managers, journalists, and teachers. Whatever career path Women's Studies students choose, they bring an articulate awareness of the complexities in contemporary society and a capacity to envision modern society in multi-faceted and exciting ways.
