“TOWER,” an innovative documentary about the 1966 University of Texas Tower shootings, will screen at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 and 2 in the FLEX Theatre at the HUB-Robeson Center -- less than three weeks after the film opens nationally in theaters. A panel discussion, including audience questions, will follow the Nov. 1 screening.

While the film documents the shootings, it dwells on the aftermath for the victims and for a shaken nation left trying to understand. Combining archival footage with rotoscopic animation, “TOWER” reveals the untold stories of the witnesses, heroes, and survivors of America’s first mass school shooting, when the worst in one man brought out the best in so many others. “Variety” has called “TOWER” “a uniquely cinematic memorial.”

Before the Nov. 1 screening, clinical psychologist Roger Friedman of the University of Maryland School of Social Work will speak at Webster’s Bookstore and Café about his recent co-authored book, “Tower Sniper: The Terror of America's First Active Shooter on Campus.” Friedman’s work focuses on how individuals and communities can successfully cope with trauma. Two months after Friedman graduated from high school in Austin, his closest childhood friend, Paul Sonntag, was shot and killed by the Tower sniper.

Screening of “TOWER” and Friedman’s appearance at Webster’s are part of a series of events, “Talking Together About Guns,” endeavoring to prompt productive communication about gun violence and its differing effects on individuals and communities across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the nation, and the globe.
